LET'S FLAMINGO

About

Experience Palm Desert's first 18 hole putting green. Known as the Flamingo, the green features wild slopes and hills to challenge any golfer, but can also be set up for a less-severe test for golfers. The Flamingo name comes from Biggi’s love of flamingos and from a raised image of a flamingo in the center of the green that causes some of the sharp slopes. That flamingo was put into the green at Biggi’s request by architect Jay Blasi.

Jay Blasi knows there is only one reason for a one-acre putting green to exist.

“A putting green, a large putting green or a putting course, is a place for people to come and have fun,” said Blasi, the designer behind a one-acre green under construction at Shadow Mountain Golf Club in Palm Desert. “The beauty of it is golfers from age 4 to 94 can come out, and scratch golfers and people who have never played a full round of golf can enjoy it.”

Rules

Every hole has a Black Pin with the corresponding hole number. Place your ball down on the putting green no more than one foot away from the pin on either the side. Putt towards the corresponding flag. All flags are numbered.  If you are playing as a single player, continue putting until the ball makes it into the hole. If you are playing with various players, take turns hitting the ball. You may want to pick up your ball and mark its position with a ball marker so the next player does not hit your ball. Typically after the first putt, whoever is furthest from the hole  putts next. Once you make it into the hole, mark down your score on the score card which is provided when checking in. Continue on until you have played all 18 holes. Our one and only rule on our putting course is to have a good time!

Different Game Formats

1. Par-Chase Challenge

  • How it works: Set a realistic par for each hole. Every player tries to match or beat par.

  • Twist: If someone beats par on 3 holes in a row, they get a bonus point. If they bogey 3 in a row, they lose a point.

2. Team Relay Format

  • How it works: Teams of 2-4. First player putts until they sink it, then player two goes for the next hole, and so on.

  • Twist: If someone 3-putts or worse, they must sit out the next round.

3. Poker Putting

  • How it works: Every time a player sinks a putt in 2 or fewer strokes, they draw a playing card.

  • Goal: At the end of 18 holes, best poker hand wins (not necessarily the best putter).
